Photo Identification Image Requirements

Identification Photos should be supplied by you at an appropriate size preferably in JPG format.

Ideally identification photos will be:

  • small enough to send efficiently by email
Size of the subject in the photo
  • Diagram 1 shows the minumum size the subject should look in the photo when viewed on screen.
  • Ideally the subject should appear larger than the minimum. Diagram 2 shows the actual size needed to print a 3cm square image.

We will crop your images to the correct size
  • If you take photos at the suggested size then it's not necessary for you to crop your images.
  • If you take photos larger than recommended you should crop your images to reduce file size resize your image. (more info below)
Basic tips for taking Identification Photos
  • Use a small photo size setting in your camera
    • 384x289 pixels
    • 640x480 pixels
  • Framing the shot
    • Take a front on Head and Shoulders shot
    • Do allow for extra space around the head and shoulders
    • Don't include more background than is necessary
  • Lighting
    • Use a flash
    • Ensure there is adequate lighting on the subjects face
  • The backdrop should be
    • non-distracting, eg. wall, door, curtain
    • similar for all photos
  • File Type
    • Images should be supplied in jpg format at the best quality option

Taking photos at large sizes

Large photos produce large file sizes.
Sending large images by email results in large attachments.

There is no benefit in sending large photos.
Smaller photos contain enough detail to produce the same quality print.

You can reduce the file size of your images by:
1. Crop your images to remove the extra background
2. Resize your image

1. Crop your images
To reduce the file size you can crop your images to remove extra unnecessary parts of the image If you do crop your images it is advisable to include extra space around the head and shoulders - (Diagram 3).
We will crop the image precisely before printing.

2. Resize your image
If your photo sizes are large (800x600, 1024x768, etc) you might consider resizing to a smaller size using a graphics program.

Reducing the image size will generate a smaller file size.
Ensure that the size of the subject is larger than shown in diagram 1.
Diagram 1.
This diagram shows the minimum size the subject should look when the photo is displayed on screen (actual size).
